First, a Quick Note About Licensing

In California, every home care aide must be registered and licensed with the state to work for an insured and bonded agency like ours. Here’s the good news: this license is yours to keep. Once you have it, you can work at any home care organization throughout California—it stays with you no matter where your career takes you.

Please note: Obtaining your HCA license is your personal choice and financial responsibility. It’s also important to know that having a license doesn’t guarantee employment with Beacon Home Care.

Home Care Aide Requirements + Hiring Process

Hiring timelines vary depending on your licensing status and how quickly documents are submitted. The good news? The more prepared you are, the faster we can welcome you to the team! Getting your HCA license is a straightforward process explained here:

Home Care Aide (HCA) License
You must be a registered and licensed Home Care Aide. State application and registration fees are $35.00. New to this? Find more information about licensing for Home Care Aide (HCA).

Background Clearance
A background check is completed as part of our onboarding process—simple and straightforward. The DOJ Livescan fee is $49.00 + applicable vendor rolling fees that range from $35.00 – $50.00.

Core Competency Certification
Proof of core competency certification is required. Don’t have it yet? No problem! Beacon Home Care provides free access to our core competency certification program.

To apply online for Home Care Aide registration, please have a credit card ready and follow the steps below:

1. Access the Guardian Applicant Portal at https://guardian.dss.ca.gov/Applicant.

2. Create an Account by clicking “Register as a new user.” A temporary password will be sent to your email account. Your Login username is your email address.

3. Enter Application Information. When prompted for a PIN (Personal Identification Number), enter R38XKSPE (the PIN for independent home care aides). You will be required to pay a registration fee of $35.00 directly to the State of California by debit or credit card.

4. Retrieve the Live Scan Form. Print the pre-populated form and submit fingerprints with a Live Scan vendor or manually complete form LIC 9163. For a list of Live Scan vendors in your area, please visit the California Department of Justice website.

If you have your fingerprints completed by Bay Live Scan, they will waive the fingerprint rolling fee. Book by appointment only (510) 526-5038
