Paying for Home Care Services

Take a look at our Beacon Home Care blog where we discuss “How Much Does Home Care Cost?”

It’s completely understandable to wonder about the cost of in-home care when you’re beginning to consider long-term care options for yourself or a family member. As a partner in the community, we’ve put together some resources that we hope will be helpful in navigating senior care.

Did you know according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, 70% of people over age 65 will need some type of long-term care —and home care is often the preferred choice.

Long term care insurance is one of the best ways to pay for home care services. This type of insurance helps cover the cost of non-medical assistance and skilled care that many seniors need as they age—without relying entirely on personal savings or family support.

Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits can be an excellent way for eligible veterans, and their surviving spouses, to fund home care services. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs offers several programs that help cover the cost of non-medical home care, including assistance with daily activities, respite care, and personal support.

Take a look at the Department of Aging website. These departments administer programs that serve older adults, adults with disabilities, family caregivers, and residents in long-term care facilities throughout your State.

It’s a good idea to look into what local non-profit and for-profit funds might be available. We’ve included a list of companies below that may be able to assist. Additionally, there are sometimes grants and respite hours provided through your hospice provider. Pending any discharges from a hospital, inquire with your social worker, or case manager, for any in home caregiving assistance your provider may be offering.

Respite programs can also serve as supplemental care. If you’re looking for respite services outside of the home, Adult Day Care Centers are an excellent way to save money while still receiving care. We also highly recommend exploring social groups, such as church or religious groups, community centers, and senior centers, as they can also offer respite care.

If you own a home, a reverse mortgage can be a smart way to pay for home care expenses—especially for seniors who want to age in place. A reverse mortgage allows homeowners aged 62 and older to convert a portion of their home equity into cash without selling their home or making monthly mortgage payments. The funds can be used to cover in-home care services such as personal care, companionship, meal preparation, medication reminders, and more.

A reverse mortgage can be an effective solution to fund in-home care services for seniors, but it’s essential to consult a financial advisor or HUD-approved counselor to understand the long-term impact. When used wisely, it helps families afford quality home care while remaining in the comfort and familiarity of their own home.
