FAQs about 24 Hour Home Care needs

The cost of 24 hour care varies based on your location, specific care needs, and frequency of activities of daily living (ADL’s). Typically, the best coverage option for 24 hour care is scheduled by two (2) twelve (12) hour shifts. Many families find this ideal because they don’t have to experience caregivers arriving in the middle of the night for care coverage.

Many families find that long-term care insurance, veterans benefits, and other grant assistant programs can help offset some of the burden of these costs. More information on financial assistance can be found here.

While often used interchangeably, there are subtle differences. 24 hour care typically involves multiple caregivers working in shifts to provide true round-the-clock awake supervision. Live-in care usually involves one caregiver who “lives in the home” for a period of 3-4 days but are entitled to sleep during normal rest hours and meals during normal meal periods, responding to needs as they arise.

24 hour care is ideal for seniors who:

  • Have moderate to severe dementia or Alzheimer’s disease
  • Are at high risk for falls or wandering
  • Require frequent medication monitoring
  • Are recovering from hospitalization or surgery
  • Need assistance with most daily living activities
  • Experience sundowning or nighttime confusion
